CROMAX BRINGS MONUMENTAL SCULPTURES TO LIFE

For over 50 years, renowned American artist Seward Johnson has been creating so-called life-scale bronze sculptures that are between six and nine metres tall. Johnson has trusted us to bring his sculptures, which are all installed outdoors, to life since 1981.

Embracing Peace is part of his Icons Revisited series. The bronze sculpture depicts the famous embrace between a US sailor and a nurse on the day WWII ended in 1945. It is on loan to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in England for one year as part of the commemorations for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and was unveiled in May 2019.

Autin Wright, Supervisor of Paint, Patina, and Conservation at The Johnson Atelier, says, “We chose Cromax because of the flexibility, versatility and durability of the products, which sync with every step of our process. Although we are using these products to paint public sculptures rather than cars, we know we can rely on Cromax to achieve the results that we need.”

The artist’s team are kept up to date with product and technological developments by our technical team in the US. As well as Cromax Pro Basecoat, The Johnson Atelier used a variety of Cromax products such as WP206/WP207 Universal Wash Primers, PS1061/PS1064 Cromax Pro Surfacers and CC6600 Cromax Pro Star Clear, as well as Cromax Imron Fleet Line Industry products such as Imron Industrial Strength Ultra Low VOC Polyurethane Clear 9C01™. To get just the right look, the Imron Flattening Agent enabled the team to achieve different gloss levels. A range of Cromax Pro colour additives were used to achieve the spectacular skin tones and colour effects.

Kevin Torfs, our Brand Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, says, “It’s fantastic to see our products being used on these amazing bronze sculptures, and even more impressive that this relationship has endured the test of time – more than 40 years in fact. We can’t wait to see what Seward creates next.”
